Belanger Treatment; Unfair

Eric Belanger is heading to Phoenix. The former Caps center had a verbal agreement with the team which was apparently contingent on McPhee trading a player (speculation was Fleischman). This deal stinks on many levels and is something that George McPhee should be embarrassed about. Not only was Belanger a great veteran presence but he was also a dominant face-off man and penalty killer. He put his "face" on the line for the team last year in the playoffs, (literally). He had already enrolled his kids in school in the area, signed a lease on a home and was ready to begin a full season with the Caps. McPhee couldn't get a trade done and thus the "verbal agreement" has been scrapped. Shame on McPhee. How about getting the trade done before you sign Belanger? You had an entire summer to get something done and now all you accomplished was putting a bad taste of the organization in the mouth a great person, player and family.

Hopefully these things don't happen often. What's the answer now, George? Still no physical D or 2nd line center. Don't even try to say John Erskine. I like John but he's no top 2-4 shut down D man. Furthermore, are we to think that Marcus Johannson is the answer at center for Semin? Too many questions still as camp is just around the corner.

Mitchell To The Kings

UFA defenseman Willie Mitchell has signed a 2-year deal with the Los Angeles Kings. The deal is reportedly for 3.5 million per year. That seems like an awful big paycheck for a player who has been injured so much. Mitchell has also been concussed a few times (See Pothier). If the rumors were true about Washington being a serious bidder, I can't fault McPhee for walking away from that kind of a contract. It will be interesting to see how many games Willie plays this year!

Attention may now focus on Bieksa, Jackman or Brewer. Where will Flash spend 2010-11? Will George hold off until later in the year when the salaries won't cost as much towards the cap? There are still alot of questions and still time!

Mitchell Still Not %100

According to Willie Mitchell's agent, (former Cap) Mike Liut, the defenseman is still not in top shape. Apparently he is symptom free from his concussion(s). That is a good sign. How durable will he be remains the question. If the rumor regarding Flash is accurate, why was Mitchell in town? I don't see McPhee signing a UFA defenseman AND trading for another defenseman? I have to believe a center would be in play for Flash? Maybe packaging other players for a run at Savard isn't such a bad idea. If Boudreau can send out his first two lines of Ovechkin, Backstrom, Knuble followed by Semin, Savard, Laich! I like that line-up. Again, I'm playing fantasy hockey at this point not knowing the reality of the future deals on the horizon. It does make sense though; physical D-man and second line center!

Time will still tell!!

Crazy Thought or Crazy Like a Fox?

Here is a move that may make sense? The Caps have signed Eric Belanger to center the third line. The trade they are waiting to make is for current Boston Bruin centerman Marc Savard. They are not making it official until the league finishes reviewing Savard's contract. Since the Kovalchuk contract was denied, the league is looking at all deals that seem to circumvent the salary cap. The Bruins are stacked with centerman and could use a Tomas Flieschman on the wing. I'm sure the Caps would have to make another move or two to wiggle some more cap space but maybe not. They are currently $4 million under the cap. Trading Flash would free up another $2 million giving the team $6 million to work in Savard and a d-man whether it is Mitchell or Bieksa.

This is all just theory but it could work and what a line-up we could throw on the ice!! Come on George make it work.

Mitchell Pays a Visit

UFA defenseman Willie Mitchell was in town to meet with the Caps and provide an on ice work-out. He has been bothered by his third concussion from last season. Currently Washington is looking for a physical d-man to provide some grit. I'm not sure Mitchell is the answer due to his concussion history. I'm sure the Caps had Greg Smith give him a look over as well, but I also think this is a risk. Unless an incentive laden contract is offered I would be worried about a fourth concussion in the near future.

The team has still not confirmed or denied the story of Belanger being signed. This scenario will play out over the next week or two and I'm sure the team will do what they need to do to improve.

What the Belanger?

There has been speculation that the team has come to terms with UFA center Eric Belanger. The signing is not being confirmed by the team however due to even more rumblings of an imminent trade in the works? Speculation is Tomas Fleischman is in play for physical d-man. Of course this is all rumor for the time being so the waiting game continues. Is Belanger the answer for the second line or is he slotted for the third line? Many questions still need to be answered, time will tell as usual!

Hard Knocks Coming to Caps Game

I thought it would be interesting to see a 'Hard Knocks' series featuring the Washington Capitals. HBO's acclaimed series that features an NFL team during training camp and gives fans an inside look at how coaches, GM's and owners decide on there team. The show also highlights certain "plus" players and the fact that they may be making the cut. It is a great way for fans to learn more about the workings of a pro sports franchise and also allows those same fans to gain access to behind the scenes "situations".

I sent an email to Ted Leonsis about my "great idea"! As usual Ted was ahead of me! It seems that HBO will be doing something regarding the Caps for the "Winter Classic" game in Pittsburgh! I think it is great for the sport and for fans! Can't wait to see the piece.

Caps get a King!

The Washington Capitals addressed a major deficiency today by acquiring one of the best enforcers in the NHL in St. Louis Blues forward D.J. King. With the rest of the division and conference adding size, grit and security, King will fill that void for the Caps. He is most noted for beating up on former Minnesota and current New York Ranger tough guy Derek Boogaard. Giving up nearly 30 lbs. and 5 inches in height, King hammered the leagues most feared pugilist! Adding King will help in protecting our leaders and will add a dimension the Caps haven't had in since the first year of Donald Brashear. It is a great move and it only cost the team Stefan Della Rovere in return. Adding toughness and size is always important, for the Caps it was imperative. Great move George.

Caps Should Expect Tougher Competition

The Caps division just got a bit tougher with word that Simon Gagne was traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning today. If Gagne can stay healthy, Tampa has (2) solid lines that can score with anyone. Lecavalier, St. Louis, Downie, Malone, Stamkos and Gagne can all fill the net. They have the ability to win alot of games on offense alone. Look for Tampa to go as far as there "D" will let them. They have big strong forwards and defensemen that can move the puck. They will be strong this year for sure. Philly made it to the finals a year ago and also added Meszaros and O'donnell to their blue line. They also picked up Jody Shelley and Niky Zherdev. I'm more inclined to like the addition of Shelley. He can drop the gloves with the best of them but look for Philly to use him like Dustin Byfuglien was utilized in Chicago. In the playoffs, big power forwards can wear down a defense. Chicago did that to Philly to win the Cup!

Status quo might not be good enough for Washington this year, I think something is brewing!! I have no proof of this, just a gut feeling.

Patience is a Virtue?

I learned this little "title" growing up! My mom usually said it to me when I was showing my impatience over dinner, dessert, vacation or anything that brought pleasure! This seems to be the Capitals mantra these days. It seems as though they are waiting in the weeds ready to pop out and make a move that will really change the line-up for next season. Maybe they were waiting to see the possibilities they had with the developmental camp? Maybe they are playing "blink" with some teams over a trade, or a veteran player or two. Of course maybe there is the possibility that the front office is being truthful, and will not be making any moves. I doubt it, I think there is something on the horizon!

I do think Bill Guerin is a secondary move after something else.

New Vet in the Fold?

Went to see The Addams Family tonight on Broadway! Awesome show, great for families! While I was there, I ran into Bill Guerin. He mentioned that he went to a Washington Nationals game last week. I didn't push the issue but I wondered after the conversation if he was there on business, meeting with the Caps brass?

Anyway, I see Finley was in a fight today! Didn't see any highlights but I have to believe he won. Tomorrow is another day. Go Caps!

Development Camp Underway

Just ate lunch with my step-son at the Mesa Grill in Manhattan. It is one of Bobby Flay's restaurants on 5th Avenue. Fantastic southwestern inspired food. We both enjoyed the experience and will for sure be back.

As the Caps Development Camp is underway, it seems that the organization is very high on Marcus Johansson. The young Swedish center may have a crack at centering the second line? The question mark is my way of wondering if that is the best option. Why not at least bring Belanger back and allow the Johansson to learn a bit before throwing him into the pressure of that position? Maybe the team is posturing themselves to have some leverage in either signing Flash or Belanger or even a trade. That is one of the things that makes the off-season exciting! I also heard that big Joe Finley looks good so far as well!

Hopefully he will be in Hershey this year and be available for some "call up muscle" if needed!

Let's see how the off-season continues to play out!!

As Free Agency Turns!

Thank God Glen Sather isn't getting his checks signed by Ted Leonsis! First Derek Boogaard then Prospal and then he trades for Steve Eminger! Caps fans don't know how lucky they are!

Anyway, rumors are rumors. I have heard everything regarding Ilya Kovalchuk. Anything from 4 to 17 years and dollars from 40 to 100 million! San Jose signed RFA Blackhawks defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson to an offer sheet. Chicago plans on matching this deal which may open the door to the Caps acquiring Patrick Sharp. He would fit great as our much needed 2nd line center! I don't know if this is an option but it's nice to dream a little bit, right! I will update tomorrow regarding the prospect camp. In the mean time, here is my chant for the camp, "LET'S GO JOE", LET'S GO JOE"!!! Finley that is...

Sarge Signs for 4-Years

Adirondack Park-

Capitals RFA Jeff Schultz signed a 4-year $11 million dollar deal yesterday. The League leader in +/-, Schultz gets back in the mix for a relatively modest deal in an offseason where vet d-men were getting 5-6 million dollars. Jeff partnered with Norris Trophy candidate Mike Green last year and will probably assume the same role this season.

He is a reliable defenseman; although i would like to see him get a bit more nasty in clearing the crease and corner play.

Boyd Gordon Re-signs

Caps center, Boyd Gordon, signed a 1-year contract with the team today. Gordon, who had won 61% of his face-offs during the regular season, played in only 31 games last year mostly due to injuries. He is an important "role" player for the team especially if Belanger is not brought back. Gordon seemed to infuse some speed and tenacity when paired with Matt Bradley in the Montreal series. He also won 67% of his draws in the playoffs. Fans should understand that not all free agents are the "Internet Rumored Favorites"! Some signings, like Gordon, are important spokes in the wheel, He kills penalties, Plays opposite top lines, and is one of the best face-off men in the NHL. The stats don't lie, of all the players in the playoffs who had at least (50) face-offs, Gordon ranked 1st overall! That's right, 67.9% of the draws he took, he won. Ironically, 2nd on the list with 114 attempts and a 66.7% win rate, was Eric Belanger of the Capitals!

He's not going to score 40 goals a year but, if the Caps were up by 1 with :30 seconds left in regulation in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals, and a face-off loomed in our defensive zone; Boudreau is sending Gordon over the boards to take the draw. You can take that to the bank! Great to see Gordon will be back in the mix this season. Congratulations Boyd!

A Joe Finley Follow Up

Having investigated a little I have learned that Joe Finley is still under contract with the Capitals, the second year of a two-year deal. He injured his hand late last year which seemed to slow his progress a bit.

Let's hope Joe has a full recovery and is ready to reach the next level in his career. It would certainly benefit the team to have his big-bodied presence crashing the nets and banging opposing d-men on the forecheck!

Where Is Joe?!

Back in 2005, the Caps selected a defenseman with the 27th overall pick. His name is Joe Finley. He is an American born kid who stands 6'-8" tall and weighs 248 lbs. When I heard of the pick, thoughts of Zdeno Chara (II) entered my mind! I big nasty defenseman who would soon be clearing the crease in DC for years. Fast forward 5 years later and he isn't even playing in Hershey. He has been changed to a forward, but I don't know what the team's plans are for him? Could he be an enforcer type or a bigger version of Dustin Byfuglien? I will investigate this information and see what has come of "Big Joe"? My guess is he falls into the, "too slow, lack of skill category". However, if he can skate forwards and stop, he can protect the team a la Derek Boogaard. Imagine Boudreau having the luxury of sending this behemoth over the boards because someone took liberties on Backstrom or Mike Green? Fear can be a game changer just like an open ice hit or a 5-3 penalty kill. Let's see what the plan is for big Joe!!!

Kings No Longer in Pursuit of Kovalchuk?

According to multiple sources, L.A. Kings General Manager Dean Lombardi has thrown in the towel on acquiring Ilya Kovalchuk. They apparently made him an offer and Kovalchuk turned it down. This could be a case of the "Stare-Downs", but it could also mean that Ilya's demands are too high. If I am a GM, I would have to think long and hard before I commit a long term deal to the Russian forward. The best scenario for Kovalchuk may be to just sign a 1 year loaded deal with a Stanley Cup contender and then hope for a long run in the playoffs. This may help prove to other clubs that he can produce in the post-season and also may bring other clubs into the mix. As it stands now, the rumored suitors seem to be dwindling. Will this force a move to the KHL in Russia? I don't think so but I do believe he will wind up signing a 1 or 2 year deal, a la Marian Hossa in Detroit and then parlaying that into a $60 or $70 million dollar deal with a team who has strong center icemen. In today's NHL, wingers need good centers to open things up on the ice. New Jersey was too predictable and seemed to rely too much on Kovie in the playoffs. Look at the league now, successful teams are not just deep in talent and strong defensively but they have good centers.
Backstrom centers Ovechkin, Richards and Briere in Philly, Savard in Boston (maybe not much longer) Thornton and Pavelski in San Jose, Kane and Toews in Chicago. The teams that were successful had good centermen and wingers who could finish and were strong on the puck. Kovalchuk is looking for Ovechkin like money and I don't think that he deserves that strong of a contract.

Time will tell, but if he signs a long term deal look for a range between 50-70 million over 6-8 years. Maybe some team out there will take the chance and give him 7-9 million for the year, I don't think it was a great year for free agents in terms of good teams with cap space? Time will tell, maybe I will be surprised... maybe I won't!

The Business of Happiness

I am typing this entry from my iPhone so I hope it is clear as I can not read the entire blog just a few words at a time! I am in the process of reading Ted Leonsis' book entitled, 'The Business of Happiness'. I find it to be very real and inspiring. I have heard some folks remark that it is a self promotion explaining how he became extremely wealthy through being at the right place at the right time?? This I don't understand. I am a firm believer that luck follows people of action. That is to say that there are those who talk and those who do! Ted is a person who DID! Of corse he still 'DOES', but he has a much greater purpose to provide the community with a sense of passion and ultimately, Happiness! I was skeptical early on with the Washington Capitals direction. I was a frustrated fan who has watched the team for over 20 years. Tired of first round exits and overtime losses to the Penguins. Then the addition and subsequent subtraction of an underperforming Jaromir Jagr.
Then "the plan" was rolled out! They traded away high salaried vets and acquired draft picks and high level prospects. Now, back to the luck thing. By being bad we obtained Alex Ovechkin. Let's not understate the importance of OV in the plan! But with it was all created with a 5-year plan and a leader who truly stays the course. I'm looking forward to implementing some of these elements into my life. A bit of refocusing and reflection. I am more confident then ever regarding the direction of the team. Will I ever question moves again? Sure I will, afterall I do have a great deal of knowledge of the NHL and the history of what has win and what hasn't. For instance, I'm still concerned that we don't have a physical defenseman?? We don't exactly put fear into the eyes of forwards! But that's the beauty of a passionate fan base! We can voice our opinions and discuss the topics but at the end of the day, we don't sign the checks!! Let's Go Caps!!

Getting Back At It!

Wow, I took some time off, but now it's time to get going again. One reason is I miss hockey already. The NHL finals ended when the Blackhawks won the Cup a couple weeks back. They were the more skilled team in the series. The Flyers defied the odds and put up a respectable series but in the end the depth of Chicago and overall talent prevailed. The Caps will have to wait another year to see if they can play in the last game of the year. I'd rather not rehash the Montreal series as I truly believe there was a bit of goaltending luck on Montreal's part and a lack of physicality on the blue line for Washington. The Caps lack a "feared" defenseman. I understand that our style of play is up tempo all the time but guess what folks? The playoffs is a different set of circumstances. Every shift is intense, every loose puck important, every powerplay means more, every shot is a potential game winner. It is the nature of the beast in the NHL Playoffs! That is why it is the most exciting time in sports.

The Draft saw the Caps pick a couple more Russian players in Evgeny Kuznetsov and Stanislav Galiev. Time will tell if they will be productive players (Kuznetsov is a centerman with alot of skill). I believe the Ovechkin factor helps the team reach some of these Russian players. They seem to want to play with him in the NHL. We will see. I am more interested in free agency and if George McPhee will address any needs for a physical D or a Second Line center. He pursued Mike Modano at last years trade deadline? Does he see a need for him on a cap friendly 1-2 year deal, similar to Federov's? Or maybe a younger faster playmaker that can compliment Semin better. July 1st at noon starts the free agency period! It will be interesting.

Gearing Up For Pittsburgh

The Washington Capitals have a few days off until they play the Penguins on Wednesday night. A few days for the coaches to touch on a few items prior to the playoffs. Although Wednesday's game would seem more important for Pittsburgh, Washington should not rest on it's laurels. The mindset of the team should be, do not give the Penguins an inkling of confidence heading into the playoffs. If things play out the way they should, the Capitals will be facing Pittsburgh in the Conference Finals. This would be the perfect chapter for this year's Caps' team! Eliminate the hated 'Pens as they did to us last year. I understand that Pittsburgh has gotten the best of Washington in years past, this year's team is different though. They have experience, depth, speed, confidence and the ability to comeback from any deficit. They seem to be playing with the right attitude. There have been lapses at times, but even with those lapses and the loss of their best player for several games, they are in First Place in the NHL! They will clean up the 4 on 4 play, as well as focusing on not taking untimely penalties. They will also go over zone coverage so as not to have confusion on players "switching" defensively. Most importantly in my opinion, they will continue to stress pressure on the Penalty Kill. It has proven to work for them when they adhere to it! LET'S GO CAPS!

Ovechkin Scores Winner in Return

Alexander Ovechkin wasted little time getting back into the groove. He scored on a breakaway pass from Nicklas Backstrom. Contrary to Tarik's article in the Washington Post, it was a forehand shot not a backhander. Maybe Tarik momentarily forgot Ovechkin was right handed!! Anyway, the Capitals best player last night was Jose Theodore. He made 33 saves on a determined Lightning attack, and kept Washington close early on in the contest. Tomas Fleischmann and Alexander Semin also scored for Washington, while Vincent Lecavalier tallied for Tampa. One noticeable difference I recognized in last nights game was the aggressiveness of the Caps penalty kill (PK) unit. They seem to be changing there philosophy a bit and although I don't know if that style will continue, it certainly worked last night. Tampa Bay has owned Washington this year while on the power-play. It seemed the Caps were more assertive in pressuring the puck on the penalty kill than in games past; paying special attention to the angles leading to "Caps Killer" Steven Stamkos. The Lightning had 5 power-play opportunities and they were all denied thanks to Theodore and the new found aggression of the PK unit especially the forwards. The team is off until Wednesday when they host the hated 'Pens. Let's send a message to them this week, give them no confidence in beating us this year (2-0) as we may face them in the Conference Finals!!

Congratulations Mom! 33 up, 33 down!

Yesterday, my mother finished her last radiation treatment! Thirty-three (33) in all! Every weekday since early February, my father would drive her to Baltimore to receive her radiation. Mom, who I have never heard (in 40 years) complain about anything, faced the daunting task head on (literally)! She has always been an extremely positive person, but this process is even more proof that she is the strongest person I know. Even though I knew she was in pain, she never once would admit it to me. Maybe I heard the word uncomfortable a couple times or maybe even burn. What?!! Uncomfortable to me is a sweatshirt that is too small, or bleacher seat at Fenway Park! Not the results of radiation treatment. Burn, really??!! I burned my finger on the stove last night moving a pan. Guess what, this morning I feel nothing! I am very proud of my mom, not just because she is so tough, but because she has always been there for me no matter what the situation. I wasn't the easiest kid to raise and in some moments not the best adult too. She never yelled at me one time (I think she has a pact with my dad on that)!! She is very calm, and even keeled. She takes things as they come. One of her best lines is/was, "Hope for the best and expect the worst". She never seems unprepared for anything.

As I digress, I am reminded of the time recently when I went home to visit her and my dad. We had just gotten back from lunch after one of her treatments and she wanted a rootbeer float. I was in my usual position, (horizontal on the coach) and dad was in one of his favorite spots (reclined in is recliner!) and mom made all of us root-beer floats! It didn't dawn on me until after I slurped it down, what the hell was I doing on the couch while the cancer patient was tending to US??!!!

She wouldn't make much of it but, mom I'm sorry!!

Any way, my ADD is starting to take over as I type so time to sign off. Thank you mom for being such a big role model for me. Even if at times I don't display the same attributes, I do see them all in you! Thank you also to my father who has been taking care of mom during her procedures. He has certainly broken in his new car with all the driving!! He has also given me alot over the years and I don't think I tell either of them enough how much I appreciate them and love them.

Heal up mom!

Thank You Bryce!

I wanted to take some time to thank a friend of mine, Bryce Toney, for his efforts in helping rebuild Haiti. Bryce is a great person with a heart of gold and even kinder soul. I met him in Hawaii several years ago as he was employed with a company we worked with while staying on Kauai. He is a very funny, thoughtful man who loves kids and working with his hands. He moved back to California a couple years ago and opened up a boutique in Hermosa Beach. He sells lots of cool items including ones he makes himself from wood. He contacted me via email not too long ago expressing his emotions over the earthquake in Haiti. He seemed very effected by the destruction and felt a calling to do something bigger than just making a donation. After a very brief period of time he decided to collect a few donations, and fly out to Haiti with a group of other volunteers and help rebuild the country. From the pictures he has sent, they are doing great work with the Haitian people, not with just construction but in bringing some hope and kindness to the people. He is there for 60-90 days, and has already witnessed the reality of the situation. It will take years to bring the country back. When you are already one of the poorest nations on earth and you take away homes, churches, hospitals etc.. its a recipe for disaster. Bryce is doing what he can to bring smiles to some faces. In times like these, that sometimes is all that is needed for a day!

Bryce has avoided malaria and other illnesses so far. A few of his fellow volunteers have not been as lucky. I am fortunate to know him and wish him health and safety as he continues to do the good deeds of volunteering.

Back To the Blog as Caps lose to Canes

Due to some unknown reason, I had to shutdown the blog for several days. There was something wrong with the site from a technical standpoint. I am not, I repeat, I am not technical! I am hoping the glitch is gone but don't know for sure,..yet!

On the heels of the Caps overtime loss to Carolina last night, I am not concerned in the least. The Capitals, aside from a couple of brain...freezes, dominated play. I think they have also found some chemistry with the third line of Brendan Morrison, Jason Chimera and Eric Fehr. Since Morrison's benching, that line has dominated. Boudreau has shown confidence in them as well. They were on the ice with 10 seconds left as Fehr found the back of the net to tie the game and force overtime with under 10 seconds to play. Chimera is one of the fastest skaters in the league and can create uncertainty for the oppositions defense. Especially if teams are using there 3rd set of D on that line.

Anyway, when Ovechkin returns, the playoff roster should round out nicely. Oh, on Alex's suspension, bad call, but it's over and he needs to get his offense going! 2 goals since the Olympic break is not getting it done for him. If Crosby wins the Richard Trophy I think I might puke!

This team never quits, they are never to many goals behind! Evidence with the comeback versus Chicago when down by 3 entering the 3rd period. Followed up by the tying goal last night to force overtime with just a few seconds on the clock. They have the experience now, they have battled adversity and overcome deficits. The Capitals, knock-on-wood, are primed to make a run for Lord Stanley. Let's get some guys rested and strap ourselves in, this ride could be one of the most exciting to date for Caps fans!

Caps Continue Winning; Beat Rangers 2-0

Jose Theodore is really starting to silence the critics. The Washington Capitals net minder didn't allow a goal in winning 2-0 against the New York Rangers. In addition, Eric Belanger got his first goal as a Cap in only his second game since the trade. Washington continues to win despite not getting scoring from it's top tier players. Ovechkin, Backstrom and Semin are in rare slumps and the team is still posting W's! That is a very good sign. Let's see if they break out versus Dallas tonight.

Leonsis may have gotten to Snyder and 'Skins!

I hate to bring up the Washington Redskins on a Washington Capitals Blog, but... I am! A few years back after paying high dollars for super-stars and failing in the standings, Ted Leonsis (Caps owner) sought out change. Not just a trade or two. I mean organizational change from top to bottom. If the Washington Capitals were to be successful they had to tear it down and start over. Management started on a five year plan that saw the entire culture of the Caps franchise overhauled. Gone were the overpayed under performing INDIVIDUALS. In were tons of draft picks, a focused front office and scouting department and an owner who was smart enough to know what his strengths are. If you develop a service or product and open a business to sell that service/product, you need a plan. Leonsis knew how to market and build a brand. He did a pretty good job with a small company called AOL! He might not have known what a blue line was before he bought the club but he did understand the bottom line. He did attempt, at first, to market and produce a instant winner with the signing of Jaromir Jagr. He quickly realized that this wasn't the answer. The organization had to get bad before they got better. So it began, with all the trades to accumulate draft picks the overhaul began. In came, Ovechkin, Laich, Fleischmann, Semin, Green, Fehr, Backstrom, Varlamov, Carlson, Alzner. Any free agent signings would be to infuse role type players to help facilitate leadership and experience into the line-up. The last mistake was the signing of Michael Nylander and adding a no trade clause to his contract. These clauses will NEVER be found in another Caps contracts as long as McPhee is the GM. Now, realistically would the team be where they are without Ovechkin? Probably not. But were the Bruins the Bruins without Orr? Were the Oilers the Oilers without Gretzky? Would the Penguins be the Penguins without Lemieux? No, every franchise, I believe, needs a FACE of that franchise. The team then tends to take on the personality of that player. The Caps are an exciting, enthusiastic, energetic team with a great future because of the direction and plan of the owner. Attendance is at an all time high, the brand has been established, the farm club is stocked with talent and their payroll is extremely manageable. The same promise Ted made to season ticket holders is being lived out. They are on the cusp of their first Stanley Cup and the future looks bright.

Drive over to Landover, MD (former home of the Capital Centre) and take a look at the Washington Redskins! A franchise that was once a powerhouse, is a shell of itself because the owner thought for too long that the way to win was to sign "old" superstar players. To cut to the chase, it has failed miserably. Is there light at the end of the tunnel this off season? In years past, Snyder would win every off season by signing players high profiled free agents in hopes of turning things around. Now, Bruce Allen and Mike Shanahan seem to have a little control over the direction of the club. They purged the roster of 10 players and their contracts. They haven't sent "Redskin 1" for the likes of Julius Peppers, or Karlos Dansby. They seem to be waiting in the weeds for the dust to settle. Waiting for the players they will NEED!! Offensive lineman, defensive linemen, secondary and maybe a QB. Seems like I have seen this change before! Maybe, I am writing this too soon and the 'Skins will still make flashy signings. Although, I have a good feeling about these new leaders. Are they as patient as Ted? Time will tell. They need to be more patient if possible. Fans don't trust Snyder. The jury is still out on Allen and Shanahan. At least Shanahan has something "The Danny" does not, a Super Bowl trophy and a history of winning!

Caps Beat the 'Bolts in Sloppy Fashion

Although there were some moments in tonight's game, it wasn't a picture perfect game. Washington still managed to win as new comer, Scott Walker scored 2 goals including the game winner. Both of his tallies were backhanders off of rebounds. He had a terrific game. Mike Knuble scored 2 and Eric Fehr netted the first goal of the game. I'm sure these final 18 games will be a time for Boudreau to emphasize system play and find the right line combinations for the new players. The Caps allowed Tampa to get back in the game too many times instead of tightening down defensively with a 4-2 lead. Again, the role players played better than the Olympic participants! Let's hope that is just a temporary problem! Washington took too many penalties and gave up to many PP goals. Varlamov looked good at times but will need a few more games to get back to his playoff shape from last year. Final score 5-4 Caps. I guess a win is a win, but there is plenty to work on still.

Caps Beat Sabres on Deadline Day

The Washington Capitals made four trades today, and then went out and beat Ryan Miller and the Buffalo Sabres, 3-1. I should say that the game was delayed a few minutes as the crowd gave a standing ovation for Ryan Miller. The USA goaltender was between the pipes for the first time since the gold medal game against Canada in the Olympics. John Carlson, the rookie Caps defenseman from Natick, Massachusetts, was in the line-up tonight as Tyler Sloan was sick and Brian Pothier was traded earlier in the day. To me, the Capitals got better as the game moved along. They started out rusty, as expected from such a long lay-off and with the exception of Tomas Fleischmann, there Olympic players looked very tired. The Caps definitely outplayed Buffalo and if not for Ryan Miller's efforts, would have won 5-1 at least.

Earlier today, the Caps made four trades. Although no new goalies were acquired, they did pick up some good players without mortgaging the future. Scott Walker, Eric Belanger, Joe Corvo and former Cap, Milan Jurcina. Two forwards that are good role players in Walker and Belanger and two defensemen. Walker is a grinder and tough nosed while Belanger is a good face-off centerman who has success on the penalty kill and is on pace for at least 20 goals. Corvo is an excellent puck moving defenseman who can help on the point for the powerplay. All in all, management did a decent job acquiring more depth. Not a crease clearing type defenseman as I thought but they did add talent. Milan Jurcina will not be in the line-up for some time as Greg Smith and his staff will have to get him healthy while he recovers from an injury.
He will be out for 4-6 weeks.

Eric Belanger has been traded from the Minnesota Wild to the Caps. The Center is heading to Washington for a second round pick. George is sneaky!! Picked up 2 good players so far. I'm excited about the stretch and playoffs.

Caps Pick Up Scott Walker

In a small move, the Caps pick up Scott Walker from the Carolina Hurricanes for a 7th round pick. I'm assuming he was brought in for toughness and to be an energizer. I have a feeling there is more left for McPhee.

Caps Waiting For Sabres In Buffalo as Deadline Approaches

The Washington Capitals are already in Buffalo for tomorrow night's game versus the Sabres. Buffalo meanwhile is in Pittsburgh, currently losing 2-0. As the trade deadline approaches, I am reminded of the Ted Leonsis interview on the Caps website. Ted pointed out that the Caps were interested in a particular player who was a proven veteran. The asking price for said player was a current roster player, a draft pick and a highly regarded prospect. Now I don't know any fact here but the speculation has been the Caps receiving goalie Tomas Vokoun from Florida for Jose Theodore, a draft pick and John Carlson. Leonsis went on to state that "we don't know if the player was going to retire or resign and the price for a potential rental was too steep." Although Vokoun is definitely an upgrade to Theodore, giving up John Carlson for a 33 year old UFA goalie IS too much. Carlson is just getting his taste of big game hockey in the minors. He scored the winning goal in OT against Canada in the WJC this season, and is being groomed to be a top 3 defenseman for the Caps for next season. My personal opinion is if any trade involves the Caps giving up either Alzner or Carlson, forget it! I would rather send Brian Pothier, Shaone Morrisson or Tyler Sloan packing. George McPhee and his staff have a lot to decide on before tomorrows 3 o'clock trade deadline. It will be interesting if I was "reading Ted's mail properly" on that proposed trade! I will be attending tomorrow nights game in Buffalo and will try to add a post from the rink!

With Olympics Over, Caps Getting Geared Up For Stretch Run

Although I have stated before, I am not a fan of us sending our professionals to the Olympics the hockey games were entertaining! The Gold Medal game between USA and Canada was very well played. Team USA proved that hockey is strong in the States and that style of play can sometimes trump ALL-STAR talent in a short tournament. That being said, LET'S GO CAPS!

The Caps return to the ice at HSBC Arena in Buffalo on Wednesday to take on Ryan Miller and the Sabres. Rest assured the Sabres will honor Miller before the game and the fans will be excited for the return of the NHL. I would expect some rust early on from both teams, with things settling down and play improving moving into the second period. The Caps have 20 games remaining to iron out there play and roster for the playoffs. They also have 2 days left to make trades that would help there chances. I'm not sure they need much at the deadline. Unless they can get something for next to nothing, I am more and more leaning towards "don't touch this". Let's see what the week brings and support the first place Caps!

Russia Lays an Egg; Caps get OV back Early

It was hyped as the game of the tournament. Unfortunately people forgot to tell the Russian team. The Canadian's outplayed, out-hustled and out hit Ovechkin and his teammates. It seemed that they were not ready to play nor did they want too. I was most surprised by the lack of effort on Alex Ovechkin's part. I don't know if he was injured or sick but he was definitely not himself. Cameras showed him in the 3rd period with ice on his hand but the game was well decided by then. For us Caps fans, at least he along with Semin and Varlamov will get some extra rest. Judging by there efforts, they need it!

Ovechkin VS. Canada Tonight

Welcome to Olympic hockey! Tonight's game between Canada and Russia should be a fast paced physical game. I think Russia, led by the Caps' own Alex Ovechkin will pull out the victory. In doing so, the Canada will be left holding heads in hands in disbelief. Ovechkin was the best player on the ice in Russia's victory over the Czech's. When he wasn't leveling checks on Jagr he was creating scoring chances. Russia has wanted this game all tournament, I don't think the same can be said for the Canadians! Canada has everything to loose, they are expected to win gold; Russia knows this as well. It should be a great game, possibly the best of the tournament.

Also, Tomas Fleischmann played a great game last night as the Czechs beat Latvia. He scored and assisted the Bruins' David Krejci on the game winner in OT. The olympic experience and the pressure it brings can only help "Flash" once he returns to the Caps line-up!

Let's hope Ovechkin can lay the body's out tonight as he did against the Czech's, preferably targeting Sidney "Cindy" Crosby!

Miller Stands Tall as US Upsets Canada

Ryan Miller of the Buffalo Sabres made 42 saves last night to lead the US hockey team to 5-3 upset over the heavily favored Canadians. Playing before a lopsided crowd rooting for Canada, Miller was spectacular from start to finish. The US played an aggressive game. Consistently sending two forwards in deep to forecheck. They were also finishing all of their checks to make it more difficult for the Canadians to exit their defensive zone. Brian Rafalski finished with 2 goals while Chris Drury, Jamie Langenbrunner and Ryan Kesler also found the net. Caps fans were excited that Sidney Crosby, although scoring, was banged around all night and with the exception of a few plays, wasn't much of a factor.

Also worth noting, was the play of Alex Ovechkin vs, the Czech Republic! In Russia's win, Ovechkin took it upon himself to hit everything in sight! The highlight reel hit was Ovechkin dismantling Jaromir Jagr in open ice. If I didn't know better I think Ted and George (Leonsis and McPhee) bought Ovechkin dinner after that hit!

Roenick Lays the Hammer to Milbury!

In a comical side-show to the Olympic Hockey games, former NHL player and US born star Jeremy Roenick isn't listening to failed Coach/GM Mike Milbury's stomping of Sidney Crosby! In a short lived debate, Roenick contravened Milbury's attempt to compare Crosby to Ovechkin. "How can you compare Ovechkin with Sydney Crosby? Ovechkin is the symbol of energy. He plays the game with a heart on his sleeve, and he loves to score goals." Roenick went on to compliment the style of the Capitals star and seeemed to also irritate Milbury!

Ovechkin's Russian team won last night 8-2 as he potted 2 goals in the victory. If the US team gets eliminated early, I am rooting for a Russia VS. Canada final! This will really be a great game to listen to ROENICK verbally toss Milbury around the television booth. Let's hope for no injuries for our Caps players but some fun rivalries inside the games.

US Tries To Shake Off Rust In Win

In what was a very boring game, the US managed a 3-1 win over the Swiss team in Vancouver today. To say the game was sloppy would be an understatement. The Ducks Bobby Ryan found the net in the first period while David Backes and Ryan Malone finished the scoring for Team USA. Although any win is a good win, Coach Ron Wilson will need to address the sloppy play before there next game. The Swiss are not expected to medal in this tournament and the US team gave up to many opportunities. Five odd-man rushes through two periods won't cut it against Canada or Russia.

Alex Ovechkin and Alexander Semin will be playing tonight for the Russians VS. Latvia. Hopefully they will provide some excitement for the hockey fans! Talk about fire power! Team Russia's first two lines are: Ovechkin, Semin and Datsyuk and Kovalchuk, Malkin and Afinogenov. They may give up some goals on defense, but they also be filling the net up themselves. Sounds like a team we know doesn't it??

NHL Hiatus Brings Olympic Hockey

I would be lying if I said I am a huge fan of professional athletes participating in the Olympics. I understand the argument people have about every country sends its pro athletes to the games so the US should do the same. I was 11 years old when a collective group of college hockey players overcame great odds to capture gold in 1980 at Lake Placid. That, to me, is what the Olympics were about. Kids, essentially, learning a system and sticking to the system for the betterment of the TEAM. There were no future 40 goal scorers on Herb Brooks' team. There were no "stars" per say, they had a belief, a desire and a commitment to each other. That group beat, at the time, the best team EVER assembled. They beat RUSSIA at there own game. Those kids from Boston and Minneapolis performed a "Miracle" that winter day because on that day they were the better "team".

Since we started sending professional athletes to the games, (NHL, NBA) the Olympics have lost a bit of fascination to me. Sure I will still watch the hockey games and root for Caps players. But, If there is a Canada vs. Russia final; guess who I will be rooting for? You got it, the Russian's! Thirty years ago I was afraid of Russia. Now I want Ovechkin to get a hat trick and bury Sidney Crosby!! A bit Ironic isn't it?!

As far as scheduling, The US plays Switzerland tomorrow, and Russia plays Latvia. On the 21st, USA plays Canada. Maybe we could recruit OC to dress for a game and take a run at Crosby! I can see it now as he is skating towards the Penguins star center, "he tuok the ring rite off my finga"!!

Feeling the Blues in St. Louis

Although the Capitals got a point in St. Louis they still need some work. The break will do them good I think. Their defensemen need to play with more grind, the secondary players, i.e. Boyd Gordon, David Steckel and the like, need to be more consistant. The caps lost there last three games heading into the break and did not look good at all in those losses. They dominated in face-offs won and their forwards played better coming back to the puck, they still played like the break was already here and the game was a scrimmage. Again I will give them the benefit of the doubt and hold Judgement until after the break.

OLYMPIC BREAK ARRIVES; CAPS ROSTER REMAINS SAME

There were a few trades today, none involving Washington. After Matt Cullen was shipped to Ottawa, Cam Barker was sent from Chicago to Minnesota in exchange for Kim Johnsson and Nick Leddy. The Rangers continue to make "scratch your head moves" by acquiring Sharks tough guy Jody Shelley for a draft pick. The Capitals have one last game with St. Louis before the Olympic Break. After watching the Blues man-handle the leafs tonight, the Caps better be ready to play defense!

A "tip of the cap" to Brian Burke and his family. The Leafs GM gave his first public comments tonight since the tragic death of his son, Brendan. An emotional Burke spoke before his team played the Blues in St. Louis. Unfortunately (or not) Burke has to now focus on the US Olympic Team. GO USA!

Although I am not a fan of professional athletes in the Olympics, I will be rooting for Burke and the US club.

One last note: I heard Mr. Leonsis interviewed on NHL live earlier in the week and enjoyed it immensely. One highlight of the piece was his response to a question regarding trades with the Caps. Unlike some of the other team owners in DC, Leonsis takes a hands off approach unless, by his own admission, "George try's to trade Alex Ovechkin"!! When McPhee traded Captain Chris Clark and Milan Jurcina earlier in the year for Jason Chimera, the GM didn't need to get permission first. McPhee simply explained the decision the next day and moved on.

Ted Leonsis truly wants a Stanley Cup in DC! The difference is that he doesn't just want one! He wants an organization committed to winning multiple championships. I for one am excited for the future both short and long-term.

Early Thoughts

Matt Cullen has been traded to the Ottawa Senators in exchange for Alexandre Picard and a second round pick? After Florida received a second round pick for Dominic Moore from the Canadians yesterday, this trade doesn't surprise me in terms of compensation but I'm wondering if Washington was in on this conversation until Carolina upped the ante to add the second piece? He would have been a good addition to the Caps up the middle. He can face-off and put some points on the board.
My gut feeling here is that George McPhee is not interested in (what he perceives) overpaying for players. He has said all along that he won't mortgage the future of the franchise for a rental. In today's economic climate in the NHL, teams want to dump salary when they are not having success but want picks for the future; unless you are Calagary! I personally think a 2nd round pick for a 17 point veteran is too high a price. Dominic Moore, although a nice role player is not worthy of a second round pick. Here in lies the dilemma! Stay tuned as the 3pm roster freeze is a few hours away.

At A Loss In Ottawa

Second loss in as many nights for the Capitals. This game was similar to the past few games; Caps fall behind but rally to take the lead only to loose in the end. Excuses could be made: Varlamov was looking for his first win since December 7th 2009 vs. Tampa Bay. He has been nursing an injury and was extremely rusty especially on Alex Kovalev's pp goal in the third period. In addition the Caps were missing Tom Poti and Shaone Morrisonn as well as Jason Chimera. The bottom line is they need to tighten up defensively and move the puck out of there defensive zone much quicker. I am going to give the team the benefit of the doubt until after the Olympic Break! They can seemingly score at will, unfortunately, lately so can't the opponent. Olympic Trade freeze starts tomorrow at 3pm?? Time will tell but that's why George gets the big bucks. St. Louis on Saturday and then 6 Caps are Vancouver bound. I'll check back tomorrow with any needed updates.

FIRST INSTALLMENT "CAPITALS" REFLECTIONS

Let this be the first of many! Today is February 11th, 2010. It marks the first entry into the "Washington Capitals Reflections" blog. Everything and anything Caps Hockey! I am a die-hard Washington Capitals fan since the 80's when my father took me to my first game at the old Capital Centre in Landover, Maryland. I've been to hundreds of games since and had the pleasure of meeting and be-friending several former players. Hockey has always been my favorite sport and since I now reside in Western New York I decided to (after many years) get a little more involved with news and conversations/debates over my beloved team.

Starting with the "Streak Breaker" versus the Canandians. As Coach Budreau stated, (paraphrasing) they were beginning to play extremely sloppy in their own end. Defensively, they seemed a step slow. The defense were not focused, they were not moving their feet and as a result the Canadian forechecking created problems. I think the Olympic Break will help the Caps more so then not. Not only do All of their defensemen get to rest, but they will finally get some practice time for the stretch run into the playoffs.

This time of year can be very exciting for fans as it is Trade Deadline Time! If you have been following the reports, GM's will be treating this like there are 2 deadlines, one before the Olympic roster freeze on Friday and 1 before March 3rd.

Do the Caps need to add ??? That is a tough decision for George McPhee. Another rugged defenseman perhaps, maybe a veteran center? The team currently stands atop the Eastern Conference, so do you fix something that really isn't broken or do you adjust from within????
